With vision correction, as with many surgical specialties, a surgeon who has extensive experience brings countless advantages to his patients. Dr. Herschel is a specialist in both vision correction (refractive surgery) and cornea (the cornea is where LASIK and other vision correction surgeries are performed), and he has more than 25 years of surgical experience. He has examined over half a million eyes, each one of which was unique. Dr. Herschel has the expertise and knowledge to provide his patients of any age with the best possible vision, not just for today, but throughout their lifetimes. That is the core of what we do.
At our center, Dr. Herschel offers only all-laser LASIK. That means that Dr. Herschel cuts the LASIK flap using a femtosecond laser and then uses an excimer laser to sculpt the surface of the cornea. The flap is gently put back in place and serves as a natural bandage for the eye, enabling faster healing. All-laser technology is an advanced technology that can be customized to each eye. It has been shown to be safer and produce better vision outcomes than older mechanical blade technology.
We do not use a microkeratome (mechanical blade) in our LASIK surgery. The blade is an older technology that is not customizable for individual patients and has less precision; we cannot recommend it for any LASIK patient.
Topography-guided laser surgery is a technology that utilizes topographic measurements to map the irregularities of a patient’s corneas and combines that information with refractive error to produce a personalized treatment plan for vision correction patients. This technology is well-suited to patients with irregular corneas, and it can be incorporated into LASIK or PRK to treat nearsightedness, astigmatism, and farsightedness.
