Light Adjustable Lens

At Herschel LASIK and Cataract Institute, we are proud to offer our patients the latest advancements in cataract surgery, including the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) and Light Adjustable Lens Plus (LAL+). These innovative intraocular lenses allow for customized vision correction after cataract surgery, allowing you to achieve the best possible visual outcomes tailored to your individual needs.

What Are the Light Adjustable Lens and Light Adjustable Lens Plus?

The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) and Light Adjustable Lens Plus (LAL+) are innovative intraocular lenses (IOLs) that can be customized after cataract surgery to optimize your vision. Unlike traditional IOLs, which have a fixed power, the LAL and LAL+ allow your eye doctor to adjust the lens power precisely to your individual needs, ensuring the best possible vision outcome.

The LAL+ is an advanced version of the original LAL, featuring a modified aspheric anterior surface, which creates a small continuous increase in central lens power. This unique design is intended to slightly extend the depth of focus, providing enhanced visual performance at various distances.

How Does the Light Adjustable Lens Work?

The Light Adjustable Lens is made of a special photosensitive material that can be reshaped using ultraviolet (UV) light. After the lens is implanted during cataract surgery and your eyes have healed from the procedure, your eye doctor will perform a series of non-invasive light treatments to adjust the lens power.

During these light treatment sessions, your eye doctor will use the Light Delivery Device to apply controlled UV light to your new lenses and adjust their power for your specific visual needs. The UV light causes the lens to change shape and power.

This process is repeated until your vision is fine-tuned to your satisfaction.

Who Should Consider the Light Adjustable Lens or Light Adjustable Lens Plus?

The LAL and LAL+ are excellent options for cataract patients who desire the best possible vision without glasses or contact lenses. These lenses are particularly beneficial for individuals with high visual demands, such as those who require excellent vision for work or hobbies.

Additionally, patients with astigmatism may benefit from the customization offered by the LAL and LAL+.

“I recently underwent cataract surgery with the Light Adjustable Lens myself. The ability to fine-tune my vision after surgery was a game-changer, and I am thrilled with the results. I believe the LAL and LAL+ offer my patients the opportunity to achieve their best possible vision.”

What Happens During Light Treatment Sessions?

Light treatment sessions are quick, painless, and non-invasive. During each session, you will sit in front of a specialized light delivery device while your eye doctor applies the UV light to your eye.

The entire process takes only a few minutes, and you can return to your normal activities immediately after the treatment. Typically, patients undergo three to four light treatment sessions over a period of several weeks after healing from cataract surgery.

Your eye doctor will work with you to determine the optimal number and frequency of treatments based on your individual needs and progress.

How Long Will It Take To Have Clear Vision With the Light Adjustable Lens?

Most patients achieve stable, clear vision within a couple of weeks to a month after their cataract surgery, once the light treatment sessions have been completed. During this time, you will need to wear UV-protective glasses when outdoors to prevent unintended changes to your lens caused by natural sunlight.

Once your light treatment sessions are finished and your vision has stabilized, you can enjoy the full benefits of your customized Light Adjustable Lens or Light Adjustable Lens Plus. Many patients find that they can perform most daily tasks without the need for glasses or contact lenses, thanks to the precise vision correction provided by these innovative IOLs.

Beautiful office. Amazing and caring staff. Getting my surgery done Saturday and the Doctor and the staff helped choose the right option for me and I didn't feel pushed to commit. One of the only few who commits the patient to a dry eye treatment as per my research. Post-surgery I hope to keep my 5 star rating because I have nothing bad to say!

I recently did my LASIK procedure about 1 week ago and was completely blown away from beginning to end with the SERVICE received from the entire staff at Herschel LASIK. The office is beautifully decorated and the staff was always professional, personable, knowledgeable and friendly. I particularly enjoyed the way that everything was explained clearly before, during and after my procedure and questions were always encouraged and answered. My experience was the best encounter to date with a physician. Excellent doctor + excellent support staff +excellent service = excellent experience and a happy customer. Thank you so much Dr. Herschel, Doris and Francesca.

Great service, sometimes a bit of a wait, but I take a full lobby as a sign of a well recommended doctor. Staff is friendly & quick to answerphones & squeeze me in when I got an eye problem. Would definitely recommend them to anyone wanting to get LASIK. Doctor even personally called to check on me the night after my procedure.

I got my LASIK procedure done here. I was apprehensive, mostly because anything to do with my eyes kind of freaked me out.
I went under a free consultation. The nurses/assistants were very nice and they answered any questions I had. Then I met Dr. Herschel and he was very nice and understanding. He explained all that would happen, how everything works, how long recovery will be, everything.
So, I agreed and start the process. I love the fact you always meet with Dr. Herschel at every appointment.
I now have 20/20 vision.
I'd highly recommend going to him for all of your vision needs.

Great surgeon and great staff. Do your research, Dr. Herschel is more than just a LASIK surgeon. He is certified and specializes in all areas of eye surgery so have peace of mind that you are getting one of the best. They use current technology and machines. More so, if your eyes aren’t ready for surgery he has no problem delaying 1-2 weeks until they are 100% good-to-go. He will not risk your health for the sake of money.
