We established Herschel LASIK and Cataract Institute because patients deserve a different experience. We aren’t a franchise or a factory. Over the years, our patients have made us the top-rated vision correction center in the Orlando area!
At Herschel LASIK and Cataract Institute, we never assume "one size fits all." Dr. Herschel has personally examined more than half a million eyes; none are exactly the same!
That’s why you will meet personally with Dr. Herschel before any surgical recommendation. (Surprisingly, not all eye surgeons make that effort.)
When you are a patient Dr. Herschel will perform your surgery, offer his private cell phone number, call to see how you are doing, and see you the morning after surgery. Our personal approach is something the franchises and factories don’t offer you.
Some providers only offer certain procedures (such as LASIK) and nothing else. Those limited options might not provide the best outcome. At Herschel LASIK and Cataract Institute, we offer the full range of vision-correction procedures including not only all-laser LASIK and PRK but also: topography-guided LASIK/PRK; Visian ICL; refractive lens exchange (RLE); refractive laser-assisted cataract surgery (ReLACS); premium lens implant options with toric, multifocal, and aspheric intraocular lenses(IOLs); corneal inlays for presbyopia; and Keratoconus treatments including corneal collagen cross-linking, Intacs® corneal implants, topography-guided PRK, and conductive keratoplasty.
Dr. Herschel is a specialist in not only vision correction (refractive surgery) but also an expert in the cornea itself (the cornea is where LASIK and other vision correction surgeries are performed). Healthy corneas are essential for any vision correction procedure to be unsuccessful. Dr. Herschel is the only cornea specialist in Orlando with a dedicated, full time refractive center.
We stay on the cutting edge of innovation, even considering that Dr. Herschel has more than 25 years of surgical experience.
Dr.Herschel participated in the FDA clinical trials that eventually led to the approval of LASIK and PRK in the United States. Today you will find the latest technology at Herschel LASIK and Cataract Institute. We continue to build the expertise necessary to provide our patients with the best possible vision—at any age and stage.
LASIK (Laser-AssistedIn Situ Keratomileusis), commonly known as laser eye surgery, has become a very popular way to reduce a person’s dependency on glasses or contact lenses.
In a LASIK procedure, the surgeon reshapes the front surface (cornea) o the eye by creating a flap—then uses a laser to remove cornea tissue to reshape it. Then the flap is placed back over the treatment area, making the procedure more comfortable and encouraging rapid healing. Dr. Herschel uses one of the fastest and most precise lasers available today.
Although LASIK is popular, it isn’t for everyone. To be a LASIK candidate, you must be at least 18 years old and have healthy eyes with no glaucoma or history of cataracts, You also should not have an autoimmune disease, or be pregnant or breastfeeding.
The important first step in LASIK is a thorough eye exam. We look at the shape and thickness of your cornea, the size of your pupil, and we check for refractive errors and other eye conditions. We also want to learn how moist your eyes are, so we can lower any risk of you having dry eyes after surgery.
It’s important to have an expert team examine your eyes. Dr. Herschel is the only corneal specialist in Orlando with dedicated refractive surgery. Our patients choose us in part because they met with their surgeon (Dr. Herschel) personally before making a decision.
We understand that finances can be a barrier to getting the benefits of LASIK. At Herschel LASIK and Cataract Institute we keep it simple and affordable--and we never lure people with gimmicks.
Our prices for LASIK are in line with national averages as well as the average range in Central Florida. After your comprehensive eye exam and evaluation with Dr. Herschel, we will recommend a treatment with a single price for workup, surgery, and post-op evaluations (no hidden fees).
If you prefer to pay over time, you will appreciate our extended LASIK financing program with CareCredit® (with zero-interest options now available). We also accept major credit cards, debit cards and cashier checks as payment methods for your LASIK eye surgery.
Of course, your initial consultation is free!
In addition to the ophthalmology work in refractive surgery and cataract surgery Dr. Herschel is also a cornea specialist. Corneal specialists have to complete an additional year of surgical training specializing in diseases of the cornea and anterior segment of the eye. This fellowship is above and beyond medical school. Fellowship training in Corneal and Refractive surgery allows Dr. Herschel to perform corneal transplants, refractive surgery, complex cataract surgery, and solve complicated cornea problems.
Is today the day you begin to free yourself from a correctable limitation on your vision—and your life?
I’m Dr. Kelly Herschel; my staff and I have helped thousands of people like you get the clear vision they want, throughout the stages of their lives.
We are glad you are doing your research. This is not a choice for anyone to take lightly.
I have more than 25 years of experience working with vision correction technologies. In fact, early in my career I had a fellowship with Dr. Marguerite McDonald—one of the world’s pioneers. I participated in FDA clinical trials that eventually led to the approval of LASIK and PRK in the United States. We have been innovators from the beginning, and in our practice we work hard to stay at the forefront of new technologies. That is one of the reasons patients come to us, from across Florida and around the world.
But our expertise extends even farther. Because I am also a cornea specialist, we are uniquely able to help patients with a full range of procedures including: all-laser LASIK; PRK; topography-guided LASIK/PRK; Visian ICL; refractive lens exchange (RLE); refractive laser-assisted cataract surgery (ReLACS); premium lens implant options with toric, multifocal, and aspheric intraocular lenses (IOLs); corneal inlays for presbyopia; and Keratoconus treatments including corneal collagen cross-linking, Intacs® corneal implants, topography-guided PRK, and conductive keratoplasty.Only a few practices in the U.S. combine vision correction and a cornea specialty.
Your eyes aren’t exactly like anyone else’s. Our patients chose Herschel LASIK and Cataract Institute—and recommend us to their friends—for many reasons. One we hear a lot is the personal touch; we take the time to thoroughly examine your cornea as well as discuss your goals, lifestyle considerations, and any concerns. When you contact us, know that I will speak with you directly before ever recommending a procedure.Consider me your personal surgeon.
All of us at Herschel LASIK and Cataract Institute look forward to hearing from you,
Sincerely,
Kelly Herschel, M.D.
PRK (Photorefractivekeratectomy) is similar to LASIK, as a laser eye surgery for correcting vision problems and reducing dependency on glasses and contact lenses. The PRK procedure uses a laser light beam to reshape the surface of the eye but, unlike LASIK, there is no flap created during the surgery. PRK is a great option for those who have thin or irregular corneas. Patients may experience more discomfort following PRK with a longer healing period than LASIK. Although the healing period may be longer with some slight visual fluctuations, the ultimate visual results are the same as LASIK for most patients.
learn moreVisian ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) involves placing a soft, flexible lens in the eye to correct vision problems. While traditional contact lenses go on the surface of the eye, the Visian ICL is made of a very specialized, biocompatible material that is placed between the iris (the colored part of your eye) and the natural lens. The ICL has a UV blocker which protects the retina from harmful UV rays and is ideal for people with moderate to high myopia, thin or irregular corneas or those who like the option of reversibility. Unlike LASIK and PRK, the Visian ICL does not involve removing tissue (reshaping the eye), does not contribute to dry eyes and can be removed for future eye surgery if necessary.
learn moreWith Clear Lens Exchange, a surgeon removes the natural lens of the eye and replaces it with an advanced intraocular implant. This is similar to cataract surgery although your natural lens has not yet become cloudy (a common issue with aging). The implants will differ depending upon your lifestyle and needs. Clear lens exchange may be a great option for patients over the age of 40 who are nearsighted or farsighted, and have become presbyopic (need reading glasses). Because the natural lens is removed, Clear Lens Exchange patients never need cataract surgery in the future.
